I have a Sony CDU76E connected to the second IDE interface of a
Goldstar EIDE care (Prime2c chip). I experience the same thing. The
CD-ROM is correctly recognized at boot time as hdc (with the correct
model details etc so it must be talking to it somehow) , but the
message IRQ probe failed (0). Any attempt to access the drive results
in irq timeouts. The drive is jumpered to master (although I've tried
slave with the same results - except it was hdd of course).
The drive works under DOS, so I am at a loss for what to do next. Is
this a problems specifically related to the newer SONY ATAPI drives???

Did you have the CD-ROM on the same ide interface as the drive you were
using? I have a Samsung and a WD on the primary - I can't imagine how
they would interfere, but then again, stranger things have happened.
Any more suggestions, experiences etc?
