newbie: cant get mouse to work

Post by bez » Sat, 30 Jan 1999 04:00:00

forgive me for my ignorance, i have only had linux for a day!!!
i have just installed redhat 5.1

i am trying to use xwindows for the first time, so i ran xf86config selected
the option for 2button serial mouse, no middlechord, yes emulation. i use
startx to get me into the x windows environment.

(i chose /dev/mouse as this was the default.....not sure what this means
though)

the graphics are set up correctly but the pointer does not want to move.

when i press  ctrl+alt+_backspace i get dropped to the prompt with the error
message:

warning:/dev/mouse unable to get status of mouse fd (input/output error)

can anyone shed any light on what i might be doing wrong to setup xwindows.
if any more info is required, let me know. (i don't have the knowledge to
fault find at all for this system, explicit instruction/explanation will be
greatly appreciated)

thanks in advance....

Try typing /usr/bin/mouseconfig (I think that's where it is) at the prompt.
This will re-run the RedHat setup portion for the mouse.

Aaron.

1. Getting my mouse to work w/ X --newbie

I've been having trouble getting my PS/2 mouse to work with X. I finally

gave up with video settings, and am just using the monochrome server.
I'm
running slackware 3.0. I'm almost positive I have the mouse supported in

my kernel (I recompiled and told it to support it, so it should work).
When i run startx i get this message:
Fatal Server error
Cannot pen mouse. (Device or resource busy)
xinit: No such file or dir (erno 2): Unexpected signal 13

In my X configuration file, I have the type as PS/2 and the device as
/dev/psaux  Can anyone shed light on this subject? Thanks.
