Problems with Quantum Fireball and AIC-7860

Post by Brad Dewe » Thu, 01 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I just recently bought a Quantum Fireball ST2.1S scsi drive to attach
to my AHA-2930. The kernel and scsi bios detect it fine, but it never
assigns it to sda!
I've been looking through all the HOWTOs and I haven't had any luck
except that I might not have my device files right. However, they all
match up, being block devices with an 8 major and 0-8 minor
respectively. I'm just sure I'm doing something stupid. They only other
thing on the controller is a HP Scanner, and it doesn't help if I remove
it. The drive is internal, and the scanner is obviously external. Both
are terminated. Anyway, here is the kernel messages on boot and the info
out of /proc. If you have any pointers at all I'd really appreciate it.

dmesg stuff:

Adaptec and Fireball doesnt like each other, I think. Some months ago
I made up an Windows NT Server with AHA2940 and 4 Fireball 3,2GB. 1
Disc didnt work at all and 2 more failed within one hour. (Our
customer was not very satisfied with the new server).

1. Adaptec AIC-7860/90/91/95 docs needed

Well, my latest attempts to get this documentation from somebody within
adaptec have failed.  As such, I'm turning to the community at large.  If
anybody knows of a way to get this documenatition to me (or the OpenBSD
project in general), that would be greatly appreciated.

If this venture turns out to be futile yet once again, the only recourse I
have left, is to recommend people run AdvanSys cards, for which I believe
we have excellent support for.

To be a little more specific, we need the user/programming documentation for
the following adaptec chips: AIC-7860, AIC-7890, AIC-7891, AIC-7895.
