I use ATI Xpert 98 8MB. Works out of te box. First with 3.3.2, now
with 3.3.3.1. All modes I tried to set up work fine. This includes
800x600, 1024x768, 1152x9?? and 1280x1024. Right now they are all
set up to work at 16bpp. I'm not sure if I tried 24bpp. I certainly
run the config. programs at 640x480x8bpp.

My current working mode is 1280x1024x16 at 100Hz. Lower refersh
rates (75,85,90) worked as well. No problems with anything I tried.
finally, I moved to Metrolink X server at such settings and it
continues to work just fine.

This is the one I use on my desktop currently, and am very pleased
with it.  It's fine for 2D, we sell quite a few of them.  I like
1152x864 with my 17" Viewsonic E771, though the card can go up to
1600x1200.

The resolution and refresh rate also depends on what type of monitor you
are using.

According to the dictionary, it's a "visual display unit".  It's the thing
you're looking at right now!!!

Get the manual for your monitor and check for the minimum and maximum
horizontal and vertical refresh rates.

Actually, graphics cards are pretty cheap nowadays, so if I were you I'd
get a good one. I'm perfectly happy with my Riva TNT based card, and I
run it at 1600*1200 32 bpp 75 hz refresh ( Windows confines me to 60
hz..... )

i am running a matrox millenium ii with 4M of wram.  it's the old
chipset (i can't remember the number atm) - not the g200.  i use 1100
something by 900.  i can go up a notch to 1200x1000ish but then things
are too small to see comfortably on my monitor.  it's a great card and
is well supported.  one of the best for X, but not as good at games.
i paid about $50 for it back in october at some computer show.
