HELP HELP HELP: my new SCSI HD locks my system (QUANTUM FIREBALL TM 2110S - AHA1740A)

Hi folks,

I am in desperate need of some advice !

A. What's up:

-       a few days ago I bought a Quantum Fireball TM 2110S SCSI-2

        hardrive.

Supposedly a drive that would run on my Adaptec 1740 SCSI

adapter (this is the EISA version of a 1540).

        Well, it won't.

Eventually my entire system is locked up because the 1740

        won't respond anymore.

B. This is what actually happens:

a.      I installed the drive. I also carefully checked the SCSI IDs and

the termination settings of ALL drives (3 hardrives and 1 CDROM).

b.      I turned my system on-line and started booting linux 2.0.30.

        All went well.

c.      I used fdisk and mke2fs on my new drive to create a large partition

of 2G.

Entered the correct stuff in fstab:

#device         mount point     type            options         freq    passno

        /dev/sdb2       /               ext2    defaults                0       1

        /dev/sda2       swap            swap    defaults                0       0

        /dev/sda3       /dst            ext2    defaults                0       2

        /dev/sdb3       /data           ext2    defaults                0       3

!!>  /dev/sdc1       /large          ext2    defaults                0       4 # 0 =do not fsck this one!

        /dev/sda1       /dosc           msdos   defaults                0       0

        /dev/sdb1       /dosd           vfat    defaults                0       0

        none            /proc           proc    defaults                0       0

        /dev/scd0       /cdrom          iso9660 defaults,ro,nodev       0       0

This should work, so I thought.

d.      Hell no, it didn't.

The kernel reports this on booting:

        ...

        May  8 19:15:36 genius kernel: Configuring aha174x at IO:4c80, IRQ 11

May  8 19:15:36 genius kernel: aha174x: Extended translation disabled.

May  8 19:15:36 genius kernel: scsi : detected 3 SCSI disks total.

May  8 19:15:36 genius kernel: SCSI device sdb: hdwr sector= 512 bytes.

May  8 19:15:36 genius kernel: SCSI device sdc: hdwr sector= 512 bytes.

May  8 19:15:36 genius kernel: Partition check:

        May  8 19:15:36 genius kernel:  sdc: sdc1

        ...

Then e2fsck started running and I started to get all kinds of

        SCSI messages, like:

        SCSI: aborting command due to time_out, scsi0, channel 0, id 3, lun0

0x08 00 43 02 00

over and over again. After a while the other drives came with

similar messages, interspersed with SCSI bus reset messages. After

a while all ECB's were in use and my system halted with a kernel

        panic.

e.      I tried anything to remedy this problem, but nothing works:

        1.      termination on/off

        2.      different configurations of the aha1740 (using the EISA

                configuration utility). Specifically disabling/enabling

                ENABLE DISCONNECT option.

        3.      my new drive as the only scsi drive (termination on/off).

        4.      trying to install MSDOS 6.0 on my new drive (with ID=0)

MSDOS creates a partition of 1023M and formats it. After

that it says it's 'analyzing' my drive and returns with

a drive failure. So at least the problem is not restricted

                to one operating system.

C. My questions:

1.      Has anyone experienced this kind of problem AND SOLVED it ??

(btw I don't want to buy a new system !!!).

2.      If so, please tell me your solution.

3.      If not, tell my.

4.      Can a AHA1740A handle these new drives ??

Many thanks in advance,

Louis Weerpas

I have a very similar problem with the scsi interface on a MediaVision PAS 16
sound card. I run my CDROM from it and have totally unable to resolve the
problem. On my system the problem gradually evolved until now I get a kernel
panic after many attempts to read the CDROM. At the moment I an sans Linux
because of it. I plan to try new hardware once the money is available.
