Missing /dev/lp0 in Red Hat 6.0

Post by Brian Hartma » Fri, 22 Oct 1999 04:00:00

I'm trying to use my printer, but Red Hat keeps giving me a "missing
device" error.  I checked the /dev directory,, and lp0 is there.
I haven't made any substantive changes to my system lately.  Anyone have
any ideas, so I can at least edit /etc/devices and get my lp0 back?

Depending on your hardware, it can be in /dev/lp1 or /dev/lp0
Check it by 'cat something > /dev/lpX', whith X=0,1,2

insmod parport reported that it already existed. insmod parport_pc ran, but
it didn't help at all. :(

Try putting

 alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc

in /etc/conf.modules and reboot. Run 'printtool'. See if it helps.

1. Red Hat 5.1 and /dev/lp0: Not detected

When I intalled Red Hat Linux 5.1, it asked if I would like to
install a printer. I chose to install a local printer at LPT1
and picked HP LaserJet 4/5/6 series as my printer model.
(My printer is a HP LaterJet 6L)
And then, a window popped up and at the bottom it said that

/dev/lp0: Not detected
/dev/lp1: Not detected
/dev/lp2: Not detected

Is it a problem? If yes, could anyone please tell me how I can fix it?
Thanks.
