AMD vs Intel, benchmarks someone?

Post by Pedro Coel » Fri, 17 Jul 1998 04:00:00

Hello!

I am  a begginer in Linux, I would like to know if someone has a benchmark
comparing the performance of a Linux based instalation running whit AMD K6
233MHz and a Intel 233 equivalent cpu.
By the way, can someone tell me what is the best monitor and operation mode
for a "decent" X windows fvwm interface? (below 17" please!)

Best regards,
Thanks in advance

Pedro

You can find kernel compilation benchmarks at my site under the 'Articles'
section at http://www.cpureview.com

Take a look at some information I put together on CPU Benchmarks, it
should give you an idea... look at the Operation Countersign link in the
sig (or http://chem20.chem.und.nodak.edu/countersign for it).  I can't
find Spec scores for the newer/faster K6's, but it will give you a rough
idea.  There is a link in the price preformance section to nBench for
Linux too, which is a very interesting benchmark site for CPU's in
Linux.

For monitors, below 17", look at

DPMS
MPRII $139

Philips Electronics 15in/13.8v 28mm 1024x768 67hz mv5011 flat mprii ddc
$146

Samsung SyncMaster 500S 15inch 13.8v 28mm 1024x768 60hz $149

Princeton Graphic Systems Ultra51 15 inch, 13.8 viewable, 28mm, 1024 x
768, 60hz, flat, epa, ergo base $155

NEC C500 15 inch Monitor .28 1024x768 $165

Iiyama Visionmaster 350 -MF 8515g - Factory direct 15inch, 13.8 V .28mm,

Sony multiscan 100es trinitron 15inch, Trinitron CRT, 14.0viewable Super
Fine Pitch, .25mm, Aperture Grille, 1280 x 1024, 60hz, MPR II $238

(prices from PriceWatch), find something in your price range, then see
if you can look at one locally.  Order it for a cheaper price if you
need to.

For About $300 you can get a fairly decent 17" monitor.  I have a
ViewSonic 17" E771 that's selling for about $299 on pricewatch now, and
I am pretty happy running it with the following Modeline (and a Matrox
Millenium II video card)
 Modeline  "1152x864"    106.00   1152 1304 1464 1522    864  865  875

When do you folks learn, that BogoMIPS has nothing to do with real MIPS.
This is a common misunderstanding... Bogo (Bogus) !!!

They are nothing then a delay-loop for the Kernel-Internal usleep() function
which lets the CPU "wait" fur 1 Microsecond.

Check out http://www.cpureview.com, in the 'Articles' section I have a Linux
kernel compilation benchmark comparting a P2, K6-2, and 686MX.

I am partial to Diamondtron tubes, and normally run at 1024x768x32.

1. AMD vs CYRIX vs INTEL

this is utter nonsense.  AMD sells the K5/100 as a P100.

nah.  I bought a K5/133 recently, and for the price ($110), it's a deal.
it's somewhat slower than a P5/133 (with identical setup otherwise),
but that's only on relatively obsessive microbenchmarks like Stream
or Flops20.  on a more reasonable benchmark (compiling the Linux kernel)
it's actually a little faster (7 vs 7.5 minutes).  and it seems to
be _fully_ compatible and runs cool.
