I've got a pnp soundcard based on the Ensoniq SoundScape 1868
processor which I can't get to work under RedHat 4.2. Does anyone know
how to configure it?

Check out the oss stuff. I think that it can be found at www.4front.com,
but if not, do a search for open sound system. They seem to support
many cards, but I believe that you need to disable sound support
in the kernal.

Hmm. I do have a PnP soundacrd with that chipset, and it works right
out of the box - even without ever having used the isapnptools .

Try running it on IRQ 7.  Don't use any special options, just Soundblaster.

Hi Michael, can u pls describes further how u get your ESS-1868 based
soundcard works under Linux.
May I know which kernel u r using? RedHat or Slackware or etc...? Coz I
have been trying to get my soundcard works under Linux (without using
third party software) for a long time, but negative!!
Thanks for your time.

Set it up the same way you would a soundblaster pro card.  Read /usr/src/linux/
drivers/sound/Readme.cards to find out how.  Make sure you get the io address
and *right.

I had to use the isapnptools to configure every logical device on the card, the
"recommended" settings for LD 3 caused a conflict with my mouse.

You need to compile the kernel with support for the SB clone as a module.  Then
use pnpdump to get a list of the available settings, edit that and use pnpconfig
to configure the card.  After it has been configured you load the module to
activate the sound device.  In my case kerneld does not automatically load the
sound module.

I can send you an example pnpconfig file if you want it.

Regards,
George.

I also have a problem with a similar card. When booting the sound card is
recognized, but as soon as it is, the loudspeakers start 'screaming'. I can
play sound files (by cat:ing .au files to the device) but the screaming sound
is always there, almost drenching the other sounds. Naturally, it's impossible
to have the loudspeakers plugged in.

I'm using RH4.0, but have upgraded to a 2.0.30 kernel. It's compiled with
sound support and SoundBlaster enabled. I used the same values for DMA, IRQ
etc as Win95 uses (under W95 the card works fine).

There is only one outport on the card, and line/speaker is selected through
a jumper on the card. It's currentley set to line out, since I don't have
external power supply for the loudspeakers.

At http://www.4front-tech.com/softoss.html for vairous kernels, you
have either to config your kernel for sound as a module or leave it out.
With this stuff, I reprogrammed my card from IRQ7 to 5.
The howling problem -- likewise here --- use a mixer program sunsite
/pub/Linux/apps/sound/mixers or from a distribution CD, you can adjust
your microphone gain down, I've found it's very sensitive, the differene
between too loud and too weak is a very small adjustment of the slider.

I suspect the major problem is that if you have a modern bios with pnp
detection that works, it's pretty painless. I.e. a reasonably new
pentium or better. The I/O ports and interrupts will be assigned by the
bios, you just need to find out what those assignments were and set up
the sound driver appropriately.

I have a 1868 in my old 486 at home, and it works, but it was far from
trivial getting to that state. Isapnptools work, but getting the
IDE port on the board to work required booting twice. Getting the sound
part of it going was easier, but you have to have sound installed as a
module so you can setup the card with isapnp then load the sound driver.

Hope that helps.

Peter

I have an ESS 1868-based sound card connected to my Linux 2.0.29 system.
Once I booted with the sound card driver, I noticed that my microphone
input was set to a non-zero value.  I fixed the problem by installing
a program named "mixer" (which allows you to set the volume of each
sound board input as well as the master volume), then using it to set
the "mic" level to 0.  I run mixer from /etc/rc.d/rc.local.  Normal use of
the microphone doesn't seem to be hurt by this mixer setting; the
audiocompose script which ships with Slackware 3.2 works fine.

PnP is usually the reason for the pain, not the answer (IMHO) .
Actually, what I did was to make sure that there was only one
possible setting the card could be placed at by the PnP BIOS,
putting these settings into my sound module, and using LOADLIN
instead of LILO for booting Linux. I never even looked into using
isapnptools ...

1. ESS Audiodrive ESS-1868 PnP w/ linux

Hey eveybody

I've got an ESS Audiodrive ESS-1868 plug-n-play soundcard.  I seem to
recall having had it work previously with linux just by specifying in
the kernel, SB16, IO=220, IRQ=7, DMA=1, MPU_IO=330 etc...but now it's
not so easy.  I'll probably have to do something like a pnpdump and all
that jazz, but i'm kind of new to pnp under linux, so i thought I'd save
the trouble by checking here...

Anyone sucecssfully setup this card under linux?  if so can you email me
pertinent info, like isapnp.conf settings, kernel config settings etc?
I miss it when asmail plays the gong when i get mail :-(

thanks,
scott
