Compaq Smartstation SCSI contoller (LTE ELITE)

Post by Johnson' » Tue, 15 May 2001 03:59:15

I have a Compaq LTE Elite with a Smartstation for docking.  The
Smartstaion has a built in SCSI controller. I have successfully used it
on FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, SCO Openserver, OS/2 Warp Connect, and Win
95.

All the above mentioned OS' recognized the controller as an Adaptec
aha-1520 without problems.  I have tried installing Debian and RedHat
without any luck.  I really want to get RedHat 6.2 running.  When I try
the 1520 driver it is unrecognized. Do I need to ad parameters or will
it just not work on Linux?

FYI... I have put an aha-1540 in the ISA slot to for a "quick fix", but
I want to use the built in one if possible. It's a matter of principle
now.

Thanks,

I have the same machine and docking station.  About a year ago I installed
RH 6.2 using the SCSI interface.  If I remember correctly I had to use
parameters during the install to get the scsi recognized.  Boot win95,
go to the system/device menu and pick the scsi interface.  Look for the
hardware address and interrupt for the 1520 and write them down. Then
when you do the linux install, it will ask you which scsi card you have
and also ask if you need to set parameters.  Answer yes to setting para,
and then type aha152x=addr,intr.

Thanks Freedman! I got it working.

I used your advice along with The Offical RH Install guide to clue me in
in the exact format. I found my parameters in the BIOS setup.

The final looked like this:
aha-152x=0x340,10,7

The 7 at the end is my host ScsiID.

Glad to have helped.  If you figure out how to get X working on the LCD
screen let me know.

I can help you !!!!

1> use the "Xconfigurator" command from a console
2> Choose Western Digital WD90C24A as your video card

4> Choose "50-70" as the sync rate
5> "DO NOT Probe"
6> "1mb" for memory
7> "s3 GenDAC" as the clockchip
8> "8 bit: 640 x 480"
9> Test it and start using X with the "startx" command from the console

As you can imagine, this laptop is slow if used with a GUI. You can use
something like "Blackbox" or "FVWM 2" as a window manager.
I have just been using TWM which is the default window manager for
RedHat. Nothing fancy, but it works very well. You may want to turn on a
virtual resolution such as 800X600 by editing the xconfig file.

My next project is to get the smartstations ethernet working. I have it
turned of in the BIOS because I have a PCMCIA card, but I want to get
the other going just to try it. Any ideas on this one?

1. Ethernet on Compaq LTE Elite w/SmartStation HELP!

I'm having trouble getting Linux to recognize the ethernet card
that's built into the SmartStation. I've tried some of the stuff
mentioned in the ethernet HOWTO with no success.

I *really* want to get Linux going (and leave MacroSlush in the
dust) but without ethernet I'm shafted.

Any ideas? Has anyone been in this situation and found a solution?

Pls. reply directly to me if possible. I'll post any results.

Thanks,
eric
