ultra160 scsi/adaptec.

has anyone tried to use any ultra160 hardware with linux?  i'm not even
sure if much is available at this point.  seagate announced various
ultra160 drives being available in q1 2000, and adaptec has a controller,
but they market it for mac g3s only (not sure why--driver issues?).  has
anyone tried to use this card at all with linux, or any other ultra160
hardware?

the adaptec card i'm referring to is the "PowerDomain 39160 Ultra 160/m"

how about u2 cards?  i've seen the 2940u2w work just fine with linux--how
about the 3950u2?  i'm sure that's fine too, but if anyone has any horror
stories about it, i'd like to hear about them.  =)

anyway, any info on that would be appreciated.
thanks.

all the current Quantum Atlas IV drives (7200rpm & 10K) are ultra160m
and the new IBM low profile 36gb & 72gb drives that are releasing "now?"
are 160m (& they all work transparently on ultra2)

but the MAC version of the Adaptec card is the only adapter that
i know is delivering currently

currently I cannot boot from CD-ROM, or diskette, when trying
to install RH6.0 on my machine, which has a 3950U2B controller
on it.

1. SCSI: Adaptec Ultra160/Advansys 2936UW + RedHad 5.2 / COL / Debian?

(Please tell me if there is a more appropraite group (should I
use ...setup or ...questions as well?)  or if I have violated the
norms of the group.)

I have a computer about a year old.  It appears that the SCSI
host adapter has flaked out -- if I unplug the SCSI cables (and
terminate it at the card) it dies randomly as before even when
booting from floppy, but if I remove the card I can boot every
time.

However, I'm unsure about the replacement card to get.  The old
one was an Adaptec 2940 UW.  Attached to it was a Seagate 9.1
3914 UW (7200 RPM), a 2 GB Jaz drive, and a Yamaha R/W CD (the
latter two 50-pin).  I use RedHat 5.2.  I have bought the latest
Caldera Open Linux and the latest off-the-shelf Debian (2.1); I
installed them briefly, but everything is still under RedHat 5.2
and I'd prefer not to go thru the pain of re-setting up the ISP
connection, the printer, the X system, et cetera ad nauseum under
a new OS.

The repair store has Adaptec Ultra 160 cards; in particular, the
29160 promises unspecified "Linux" support (and has one 68- and
one 50-pin internal connector, like the current one, and I can
ignore the LVD one for my purposes).  They have a MUCH cheaper
(circa $90 versus circa $260) IWILL "SIDE 2936 UW" card based on
the Advansys ASC 3550B.  They also have Adaptec 2940 cards, but
they're just plain Ultra, and they're about the same price as the
Ultra 160s.

Any advice?  In particular, is there any Linux support anywhere
for these two new types of cards?  Looking at the SCSI FAQ, it
appears I might get into a problem with the new host adapter card
not mapping the drive cylinders &c the same way, rendering my
data unreadable.  (I have a full backup about 14 days old, but
I'd prefer to lose nothing.)  Is there less of a chance of a
problem with an Adaptec board versus another?

Any other opinions?
