I have a compaq 151fs monitor with a compaq qvision 1280/p Controller.

PROBLEM: I don't know what to do to get X 3.1.1 up and running with this configuration.

Do you have any suggestions I'm using the slackware 2.3  CD Rom Version of Linux.

Read the docs in the xwindows directories.
You need to find out the Horizontal and Vertical
scanning ranges for your monitor.  If this info
isn't in your manuals, or on the label on the
back of your monitor (should be something like
Hor scan 30-60 KHz, Ver scan 50-100 Hz).  The
docs with Xwindows (also check the man pages
'man X*', and the howtos (can download from
any sunsite.unc.edu mirror) on X).  I think
the XF86Config man page describes exactly what
goes in each section of /etc/XF86Config file.
There are also directions in the xwindows docs
that explain how to find out the dot clocks
for your video card, but you probably need to
know at least what chip it uses (you might be
able to find this out by actually looking at
the chips on the video board).  My guess is
you have an et4000w32p chip, b/c of the /p
in the video card name, but that's not necessarily
true..

Hope that helps.  That's how I went about
getting X running.

btw, the probe command is something like
'X -superprobe' and can also be found
in the X man page, I think.

I have a feeling you'll need to call up Compaq
for stats on the monitor and card, though.

I have a similar setup (Compaq 140 monitor and QVision 1280 controller).
According to the information I have gathered so far, XFree does not and
probably never will support the QVision controller, because of a non-
disclosure agreement required by the manufacturer, which runs counter
to GPL.

What are the options then?

1) Buy a commercial X Server, e.g. from Xinside for $99.

or:

2) Buy a supported graphics adapter (check XFree docs for list of
   supported adapters).

Hope this helps,

Robert.
