CPU with good uptime, low energy usage and low heat

Post by Matthew Hareli » Sat, 22 Mar 2003 02:07:19

Hello:

I am interested in using a machine for a web server.  Its not going
to be used for full scale commercial usage, its main use will be to
maintain
my cvs repository, web reference info, and mail for when I am away
from home, or at work.

I am looking for a processor that is low in power usage and heat while
still
retaining a reasonable amount of speed.

Will a Celeron chip meet the above reqts?

Thank You

Matthew

Via's C3/Eden CPU's run cooler and use less power - no fan required on
some of them. Also, there's the Crusoe, see http://www.transmeta.com/,
but I'm not sure this one is so available and starndard enough to drop
into your favorite motherboard.

FC-PGA2 celerons run fairly cool and go up to 1.4 GZ. The newer celerons
are based on the pentium 4 core and run MUCH hotter. You might also
consider the Pentium 2 taulatins (up to 1.3Gz or so) and the via C3 chips
(up to 1 Gz or so).

Older Celerons (64K cache) runs even cooler than the 256K ones.  But it might

border to find out what users want.

That would be equivalent to 700 to 800 MHz Celerons.

Hi:

Does anyone know of a vendor that sells systems with the Via C3 CPU?

1. Solaris on x86: LOW LOW LOW PRICES

Solaris on x86: LOW LOW LOW PRICES

for the best prices on all x86 based SunSoft products.  Such as:

* Netra
* NSolaris
* Solstice
* SolarNet
* etc.

Turn that old x86 box into a powerful SUN workstation.
Remember 95% of all Sparc-based SunSoft products also runs on x86.
