Installing Redhat Linux with a promise ULTRA66 harddrive controller card

Post by Gary » Thu, 25 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I saw that on promise's site they have beta drives for redhat you can
download, and instructions on how to install linux on you system.  I was
wondering if anyone has tried installing linux on a harddrive with a
ultra66 controller card with these beta drivers, and is it worth it or
should i wait till the drivers are finalized and on the new version of
redhat linux?  Thanks in advance for you input and help.

Installing Redhat Linux with a promise ULTRA66 harddrive controller card

One of our members (J.E.J.) Installed Red Hat Linux version 6.0 using a SIIG
ATA 66 card on an FIC va503+ mainboard and an AMD K6II 400. No sweat.

I've also been able to install on an ATA-66 Maxtor drive using a Promise
Ultra/66 PCI card.

Next question: how to boot from it? Anyone know? At present I have to use a
floppy.

1. Installing RH 5.2 on a 13gb disk with Promise Ultra66 IDE controller card---PLEASE READ

Hi,

and a 13gb hard disk.  I am having a really hard time getting Red Hat to
install on the disk.  Actually, I can't even get the installation program to
recognize the hard disk at all--Only the zip drive is recognized as /dev/hdd.
Let me basically explain what I did.

I installed System Commander so I could do some non-destructive resizing of the
Win95 partition. The Win95 partition was originally 13gb altogether.  I was
able to get the Win95 partition to 10gb and I gave Linux a 3gb partition (more
than I need anyway).  But when I try to install Linux, fdisk won't even
recognize the disk at all.  Disk Druid won't either.  Both of them only see the
zip drive as /dev/hdd.

I have been able to install Linux on other machines with no problems in this
area.  The only difference is that none of the machines that I had installed
Linux on had hard drives this big.  So now I am thinking that it is the IDE
controller card.

My question is...how do I get around the controller card so that the
installation program recognizes the hard disk?

is only temporary--thank God).

Thanks in advance,
Rob
