The version of XFree86 you need is 3.3.1 or higher. If you have the most
recent card with the RAGE II+ DVD chip on it you will *have* to use
3.3.1 or higher (I think 3.3.2 is out) URL <http://www.xfree86.org>. I
am currently using these cards under RH5.0 and RH4.2 both with
XFree86-3.3.1 and they work fine. Someone suggested the MetroX drivers
that come with RH5.0... I have never tried it so I don't know.
I have seen the card work extremely well with S.u.s.e Linux, they have
an extensively hacked version of Xfree that I am tempted to try soon.
Has anyone had any experience with S.u.s.e Linux (pro or con)??
I believe Debian supports RPMs so you should be able to get all the
stuff you need from URL <ftp://ftp.redhat.com> as RPMs, makes it a snap
to install.
When you get the correct version of XFree or MetroX or X-S.u.s.e let me
know how it works. If you have any more problems/questions ask away...
Good Luck!!! (Your mileage may vary)

My original card was 4 MB, it worked fine in all resolutions, I later
added the extra 4 MB add on card (a little 7.5 cm X 7.5 cm card that
plugs into the side of the original card), it also works fine in all
resolutions. My later card has 8 MB (the little card was already
installed). Both work fine.
They are driving a 17" ViewSonic 17GS, and a 21" ViewSonic G810 monitors
respectively. This setup works fine for me. No flicker, all color depths
up to bpp 32, and resolutions up to 1024X768 on the 17" and 1280X1024 on
the 21" monitors.

It is important to know what version of X server you are running and
which distribution of Linux you are running it under to determine what
the problem is and how to solve it exactly.
It sounds as if you may not have the monitor dot-clock settings and
modelines settings configured correctly for your monitor. This is a
problem of monitor settings NOT card settings. These are set using
XF86Setup, XConfigurator, and Xvidtune. Which ever one you have.
Unfortunately these utils do not have every single monitor ever made
listed as an option... none of mine were listed specifically. I had to
choose either a close fit and/or choose "generic" and input the
monitor's refresh rates and scan rates manually. It is VERY important
that you have the correct specifications for your particular monitor.
These can usually be found in the manual or at the manufacturer's
website. These settings are automatically adjusted in the XF86Config
file, which is located in /etc and/or in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config
on my system.
I do NOT recommend editing this file manually, especially the modelines.
I do recommend reading "man XF86Config" and "/usr/doc/Xconfigurator" and
"/usr/doc/HOWTO/XFree86-HOWTO" and
"/usr/doc/HOWTO/XFree86-Video-Timings-HOWTO".
Best-o-luck.

| Hello Jo,
Hello..
| Are you currently running the XFree86-3.3.1 server??? with the current
| MACH64 driver??? See URL above.
Yepp, I've run both the 3.3.1-server and (now) the 3.3.2-server with
bad results.

| If you are using the ATI 3D ProTurbo PC2TV card there is a TV connector
| on the back, that is what the "PC2TV" part of the designation stands
| for. This connector is an output to ("2") a TV. It is only important
| that it is NOT *connected* to a TV. Perhaps, since you appear to be in
| Europe, you have a different version of the card.
But I'm not using the 3D ProTurbo PC2TV, I'm using the ATI 3D Rage
II+DVD-card. And that doesn't work.

And I do.
[Monitor settings & dot-clocks]
I've tried to "adjust" these values both manually and using XF86Setup,
xvidtune, xf86config and Xconfigurator (or something like that) but to
no avail.

I've done so without any luck at all...

Thanks.

| Whoah!! I thought you were using the same card that is specifically
| mentioned in the subject line. (see above) I was not aware that ATI sold
| a card with the designation you mention. The card I have has a *chip*
| with that designation.
I'm sorry about that, but I've been moaning about my Rage II+DVD-card
for a couple of months now, and there's been extensive posting about
solutions and opinions for this chipset (and card) both here and in
comp.windows.x.i386unix.

I wonder why there is trouble with my ATI 3D Rage II+DVD _card_ and
my card ?

1. ATI 3D PRO TURBO PC2TV & 3D XPRESSION+ PC2TV
Hi.
I'd like to hear of what kind of expieriences people have had with
these cards using XF86 or other X servers.
I'm planning to run RH Linux 4.0, and I'd like to run truecolor or
hicolor at 1280x1024. Does anyone have any comment on screen refresh
rates? Anything less than 76Hz is unusable IMO. According to ATI, the
3D XPRESSION+ PC2TV can do 90Hz, and I assume the PRO TURBO card can
do the same.
The questions are:
1) Can XF86 (or others) do 76Hz or better in 1280x1024 true/hicolor?
2) Can XF86 (or others) take advantage of 4/8MB of ram for larger
virtual desktops, pixmap/font buffers, or whatever?
Thanks in advance.
