Newbie needs help with NIC under slackware 3.0.0

Hi people!

I've just installed SlackWare Linux 3.0.0 on a 386dx-40, 4mbs ram, 340mb hd -
everything seems to work just fine, with the exception of my network card.
I've tried an SMC8000, and a D-Link 220-t (which I would preffer to use) and
neither of them are dectected at boot time.  I know both of the cards work
under DOS, as they connect to my Novell server.

In any case, is there something that I'm missing?  Do I need to setup
something manully?

You need to install a kernel with support for the network card compiled
in.  Better still would be to roll your own custom kernel to suit your
machine exactly.

Recompiling the kernel is well documented in the usr/doc/faq/howto (I
think) directory.  It will be very slow with a 386 and only 4 MB of RAM
though, so be very careful to get the options right first time and be
prepared to leave it overnight.

With only 4MB, you'll be better off with a hand tailored kernel since it
will save you some space.

Once you are sure that you have support for your card in the kernel, you
can use the Slackware setup utility to configure the network software.

Well....

(I'm sure this will provide some humor)  =)

I've figured what I needed to do to compile the new kernel.  Got all of the
network drivers in there (hope it works!)  However, the "make zlilo" compile
has been running for over 24hours now!  Luckily I'm in no hurry.  Although, it
would be nice if finishes soon!

Thanks for all your help.  It IS appreciated.

1. Help needed getting slackware 8 working w/ 2 NICs

Hello,

To get right to the point, my install of slackware 8 isnt allowing me
to use two NICs at the same time
Using dmseg I can see that they both get loaded:

Ne2k-pci.c: PCI NE2000 clone ‘RealTek RTL-8029’ at I/O
0xe800, IRQ 10.
Eth0: RealTek RTL-8029 found at 0xe800, IRQ 10, 00:40:05:F6:35:00
Eth1: RealTek RTL8139 Faste Ethernet at 0xe400, IRQ 9,
00:00:b4:93:f7:97

This leads me to belive that both NICs are actually both installed.
However, I can only get the connection lights on one NIC at a time. I
have tried connecting several various network cables from several
different sources to the non-working NIC, to no avail. I do know that
both NICs work when they are independent of each other.

I have specified eth1s IP using ifconfig ( I read the networking
HOWTO, did everything it suggested, nothing worked), but I cannot ping
it nor can I ping from it (its connected to another windows machine).

Is there anything I missed or any special tricks to getting 2 NICs
working with Slack8 that I might have missed?

thanks
