My 1.4Mb 3.5" floppy has become intermittently unusable.
At first I thought the problem was provoked by running
DosEMU, but now I'm less than convinced.
When I try to mount the floppy, mount fails with a message
like /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device, and
I get a kernel message like this :
kernel: floppy0: unable to allocate DMA memory.
I'm running 2.0.32. Is this a likely controller, device, or
kernel problem?
One associate of mine suggests that if the lower 16Mb of
memory is filled, additional DMA memory cannot be
allocated on a machine with pc architecture. This seems
quite plausible to me, but I wonder whether someone can
confirm the hypothesis.
Any workarounds?
Thanks,
Marc
