ATI All-In-Wonder 128

Post by Piran » Thu, 05 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Hello,
I'm looking for a solution to start X-windows with my All-In-Wonder and
have tried the VESA hack.  The thing is, I get 1024x768 in text mode but
for the life of me, can't see any penguin(cute or otherwise), which leads
me to believe something is wrong.  I continually can't even get X to load
no matter what server I install (even generic vga).  If anyone has any
suggestions (ANYTHING), i'm willing to listen if your willing to type.
thanks,

What distribution of Linux are you using?  Have you tried the Mach64
Xserver?  I have an All-In-Wonder Pro AGP, and it works great for me,
with that server.  (I'm using SuSE 6.1, by the way.  Love it. :) )

Not the same.  According to the XFree86 notes, the Rage 128 chipset is
not supported.

Xigraphics (www.xig.com) sells a commercial X-server (US $99) which
supports the Rage Fury chipset.  I downloaded the demo from their web
site and it worked on my ATI All-in-wonder 128.

Harish,

I'm having the same problem with the new Gateway PC I just got. I came with
an ATI card with the Rage 128 chipset, which I have found to not "currently"
supported by XF86. However, I found the following url
(http://www.0wned.org/~cain/ragefury.htm) that describes how to use the
"Frame Buffer Device" server with XF86. I found it to be unusable because of
the amount of screen flicker. I could not seem to get rid of it. I read
something about there being a fixed refresh rate when using the frame buffer
device.

Looks like we'll have to wait for support for the Rage128 chipset, write the
driver ourselves or by one of the commercial X servers :-).

I got the vga16 server to work with

    startx -- /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_VGA16

The results were pretty poor - low resolution, 4 bit color.  So now I
have two video cards installed, one for linux and the ATI  All-In-Wonder 128
for Win98.

1. Xfree and ATI All-in-wonder 128 or ATI Rage fury 128

Hi everybody

I want to buy an ATI All-in-wonder 128.
Someone has this Videocard (or another one with ATI Rage 128bit chipset like
Rage fury) together with Linux? About Xfree?
I read the XFree Faq and I saw there no ATI RAGE 128 support...
Afterall can I use just simple VGA (640*480) (or better) even if XFREE
doesn't recognize the ATI Rage 128 chipset???

Sorry for my school english
Thanks a lot
