Sorry, using deja(google)... Under my mandrake control center, it
detects my cdwriter as a cdburner, but I cant get a cdrecord -scanbus.
Also, I dont think my gateway machine is detecting it as a cdwriter.

Under mandrake control center:
Drive Capacity: burner
Channel: secondary:

/dev/hdd

Modern version of cdrecord can use an IDE cdwriter directly, not-so-newer
version need the ide-scsi conversion. See the CD-Writing-HOWTO where
all this is explained.

Yep. The fact that it shows up as /dev/hdd means you don't have ide-scsi
emulation on it. You need the module in the kernel and the line
append="hdd=ide-scsi" for your machine in lilo then change your fstab to
make hdd scd0
