Mustek, HP ScanJet and UMax scanners are all supported by the SANE project,
which can (in turn) interface to the GIMP.

I've found that the HP ScanJet 5p I have gives (surprisingly) good results,
but what you use will depend on what the scans are for.

That gives you information only on HP scanners...

I've got a bunch of scanner URLs at:
   <http://www.hex.net/~cbbrowne/linuxplatform.html#SCANNER>

Various Mustek and UMAX scanners are also supported under Linux.
One of these days I might pick one up...

Flatbed Scanner- which have a Linux driver?

Post by Andy Jeffers » Sat, 09 Aug 1997 04:00:00

I've got a UMAX Vista S6E scanner which I also want to get working under
Linux. Its using the SCSI card that UMAX provide (the only SCSI device on my
otherwise IDE system). I've enabled 'SCSI support' and 'SCSI Generic support'
At bootup I get

scsi : 0 hosts.
scsi : detected total.

When I use the SANE software to check on which devices are available
(scanimage -L) I get :-

device 'pnm:0' is a Noname PNM file reader virtual device
device 'pnm:1' is a Noname PNM file reader virtual device

This clearly suggests to me that I need something at the kernel end to set
up the correct device BEFORE using SANE. Has anybody got a similar setup
(using UMAX's SCSI controller card etc) and got it working ? What am I
missing ?

Thanks in advance.

(Deletions done for fun and profit.)

A SCSI controller recognized by the kernel.  There is a 'new' (relatively
speaking) set of 'dumb' SCSI controller cards, from a 'new' (same caveat
applies) set of 'dumb' SCSI controller chips.  Because they are relatively
new, and 'dumb', support has not yet been written into the Linux kernel (most
of the SCSI kernel module R&D is going into the high end cards.  The card
provided with the UMAX scanners is one of these 'dumb' cards.  I would
suggest getting another SCSI card, since they are (relatively) cheap, and
the ones with BIOS and imbedded controllers give better results anyway
(though I'm not certain that would show on scanner apps, since most scanners
are quite slow anyway).

The replies to this question have been most interesting and useful;
does anybody currently scan 35mm slides and negs with Linux?  Kodak
charge an arm and a leg for the service in the UK, and since I have
about 300 of them, it's almost less expensive to buy a scanner!
My PC is an MS-free zone, though!

Nick.
