100GB under linux 2.4.13?

Post by jon » Mon, 05 Nov 2001 09:19:16

Hi,

Should there be any issue if my computer (Intel P4 1.4Ghz) can see 60GB HDs
but has "issues" with a WDC WD1000BB-32CCB0 100GB drive?

The issue is that while on my P4 it is detected fine, when formatting or
afterwards when accessing the drive it makes loud clicking sounds, actually
pausing the access to the drive, then continues.

I think its about to die, but just wanted to see if anyone else has this
drive or a ~100GB HD with no problems.

I get no reports of problems in /var/log/messages so I don't think it's an
OS problem.  The drive otherwise functions perfectly fine, so it's probably
on the virge of death.

Thanks!
Jon

Yea, probably a dying drive, you might run "badblocks" (A standard surface
scanning program), and see if it finds some bad sectors.

I used to have high failure rates with WD hard drives and quit using them
years ago.

Anyone:  How have Maxtor drives been lately?  I seem to be accumulating
quite a pile of old Maxtor drives that nobody wants anymore because they are
too small, and slow, but they all work perfectly.  I am refering to the real
Maxtor drives, not the Quantum ones (from the company they merged in with).
I have seen some Quantums fail.   I have finally seen a couple of fairly new
IBM drives fail as well, which is too bad since I used to think they were
the most reliable drives made.

This is not the kind of problem that Linux and posible incompatible large
hard drives would cause.

Maxtor/Seagate seems to be reliable ones now.  To the OP, I think 100Gb
WD is still ATA-100, so it shouldn't be a problem.  I'm not sure about
the new Maxtor ATA-133 160Gb disks.
