Need scanner recommendations

Post by Brian Hane » Tue, 06 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I'm going to shop for a color scanner soon and would like it to work
well under Linux.  I prefer a hand scanner, but the only one I've found
adequate drivers for, the Genius GS4000, is difficult to find.

Later, I'd like to use a flatbed.  I like HP quality in general, and see that
there are drivers for such, but I'm concerned about stability of code (this is
a production machine) and adequacy of user tools.

Any suggestions?

Please e-mail replies as well as post here.

I just saw a message from someone somewhere (sorry!) that mentioned
getting support from Umax to write a driver.  So, basically, there's
somebody who's got info to program a Umax scanner.  You might try an alta
vista search for the message...

We (for obvious reasons :-) recommend the HP ScanJet family of scanners
for use under Linux.  The 4p is reasonably priced (under $500), and the
4c is higher quality.  Both are supported by our software, XVScan.  You
can also get the freely-available "hpscanpbm" software from sunsite,
but it only offers a command-line tool.  XVScan information is available
at http://www.tummy.com/xvscan/

Running it on a production machine shouldn't be any problem.  As long as
the SCSI board you're running it on has a stable driver (the 1522 driver
caused hangs in earlier kernels), it'll work fine.  I'd recommend a
BusLogic board for the best support.  The 946 or 948 is a good board,
and I believe is just over $100 mail-order.

Enjoy,
Sean
