Uanble to boot with LINUX boot disk - new user - help help help, PLEASE !!

Post by c608.. » Sun, 12 Nov 1995 04:00:00

Hi there:
I just bought my copy of LINUX thinking it will work well with my
486-120Mhz machine hardware.
I have a medianvision's sanyo cdrom, cirrus video card, jazz 16 sound
card.
I prepared my boot disks using the files from bootdsks.144 namely
scsi.
When I try to boot with this disk, the sytem hangs after the memory
test (It prints on the screen two of the four letter LILO, that is LI).
I am sure many of you experienced users have some suggestions and
perhaps the answer for me.

PLEASE DO HELP. ANY HELP IN THIS MATTER IS GREATLY
APPRECIATED.

LILO is a "self-tester" in itself, as well as your OS boot
loader.  When it stops on a letter like that, it means that
one of the self-tests failed.  Check out the documentation
that came on your CD-ROM such as the man-pages and the
HOW-TO's.  That should let you know about the problems that
you are having.  Need more info, E-mail me.

Hi,
I got same problem. Two things could be tried out:
1) in CMOS change the HD autodetection option
2) the MBR is corrupted: low format the drive and start over again ( you
can put a small DOS partition and use LOADLIN instead, that way you get rid
of LILO)

Any question, Email me

I've had the same throuble with my AMD 1486-120MHz in my OPTI VESA mother
board.  I can't boot any OS, neither MS-DOS, Win95 not Linux. I solved it
changing a motherboard jumper.

If you have a OPTI motherboard, you must change this jumper to boot from any
disk. I don't remember jumper number, but it changes AMD 3.3Volts 2x/3x,
to boot correctly it must be in 2x, not 3x.

Computer can't boot from disk, but if I boot from HD, disk is all OK, not
errors reading or writting.

I had this problem the first time I tried to install as well - turned out that
the floppy I used to make the boot disk had a bad sector or something.  You
might want to recreate your boot disks using a couple new, freshly formatted
disks.  Although if you did do this already then I don't know what to tell you!
