Replacing Windows NT with Linux

Replacing Windows NT with Linux

Post by Jose Antonio C. Baduria, Jr » Sat, 05 Sep 1998 04:00:00

I'm planning to replace our Windows Nt with Linux as our Network
Server. I'm quite
new in networking so does anyone know of a good book that could help me
in making
Linux as our Network and Internet Server? Also, I have to convince
management and
the others about the advantages of Linux over Windows NT.

Thanks

basicly the o'reily books on networking are ok, they have also some special books about
linux(what you like. but the best way is simply to install and try it out because with
unix some problems simply cant occur same are based in a misunderstanding
of the system.

IDG Books has two that are good LINUX Web Server Toolkit and Network
Toolkit. Then there is a good book on Samba by SSC

Don't know about the book, but here's something that should help you
to convince management:

Replacing Windows NT with Linux

Samba.  Check out "Samba, Integrating UNIX and Windows" by John D. Blair,
SSC.  I was lucky enough to have a boss' boss who actually wanted me to
start replacing our NT boxes with Linux, but I still had to convince all
the NT types that it was a good thing.

First thing to do is probably to stealth a small PC with Linux onto your
NT network with Samba;  the NT guys won't have to do anything, and nobody
will notice, until you point out what they've been using without it *ever*
crashing or needing maintenance...

I'd be glad to share my Samba config file which I wrote for this purpose.
