lil help for RH 7.3 install newbie?

Post by cd » Fri, 20 Sep 2002 04:51:38

Hello,

I've got 2 drives; windows is on one, and I want redhat 7.3 on the other.
The windows drive is my primary master, and the other one is secondary
master.

I would like to always boot to windows, no questions asked, unless one of
the following is done: (a) I booted up with the linux boot disk, or (b) I
changed the boot order in the BIOS before boot.

I've installed linux twice on the 2nd drive, the first time with GRUB (on
the 2nd drive) and the second time without. Both times I created a boot
disk. In neither case could I successfully boot. The boot disk just crapped
out on me, and when booting from the linux drive, the word "GRUB" just sits
on the screen and nothing hsppens, and the computer accepts no input from
me.

Can anyone give me any suggestions on how to get a running linux on my 2nd
hard drive?

thanks a bunch,

CDJ

I have never tried GRUB; LILO works great for me.  You can tell Lilo (in
/etc/lilo.conf) what the default boot partition is, and how long to wait
before loading the default.  But all that is on one drive - maybe it has
trouble booting from a second drive?

If I recall correctly, there are keystroke combinations that you can use while
in the Grub screen after highlighting the OS that will allow you to change
order, delete, etc.  It's just a little editing feature for Grub.  You can
read more about it in the Red Hat manuals or in the man page for Grub.

Enjoy,

Having multiple operating systems on the same machine is a great
environment for development work, however, I see many posts about how
to partition disks or make the system boot from different disks.  I
have a great solution, especially if you have multiple disks.  Spend
the $40 and buy a removable disk caddy.  That way you can have as many
disks as you want for Linux, Windows 98, Windows XP, etc.  Swapping
the disk caddy takes just a few seconds, and the system will always
boot to the drive you have inserted.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Hi CDJ,

Can you post the contents of the /etc/lilo.conf, so that i can figure
out what is wrong with my set up.

I have a similar configuration.

Thanks,
-Michael

unfortunately I can't do this, simply because linux won't boot (never
gets past the GRUB displayed on the screen).

I would be perfectly happy with a clear answer to the following
question:

I have 2 physical, seperate harddrives. one has windows on it, and the
compputer boots to this drive. I would like linux on the other drive,
and have an easy way to control which drive/os is loaded upon powerup.
what's the easiest/best way to achieve this?

Thanks for your reply, and any further advice you can give,

Probably because the BIOS don't support booting from it. Had the same
problem here. A 120Gb disk which was master (and WinXP) and a 30Gb disk
(slave) which I wanted for linux. The easiest solution for me was to set
the 30Gb as master and the 120Gb as slave, partition the 30Gb as:

100Mb - /boot
10Gb  - WinXP
20Gb  - Linux

And then use the 120Gb as storage. This works fine with GRUB.

You could get a boot utility to hide the disk you don't want to use. Then
install GRUB on the linux disk.

Trios makes some nifty hardware that allows you to install multiple hard
drives, and select the one you want to boot from with a button before boot
up.  Then all drives are master, but only one of them is selected as the
usable drive for the particular session.

I have 2 physical drives (40 GB (master) - W2K, 8GB (slave) - RH73). I
chose boot from diskette during installation. Without boot disk in
floppy drive, W2K is always the primary OS on power up. It never
failed to boot to RH73 partition either with boot disk in the floppy
drive. Not sure this helps you or not.

I have RedHat 7.3 installed on second hard drive with Windows 2000 Pro on
the first hard drive. grub is installed on the first hard drive. grub offers
to boot either win2k or linux. Both OS's boot depending on keyboard choice.
Linux is the default OS.

1. LIL- after installing SuSE 7.3

Hi, i've just installed SuSE 7.3 (no other OS) on my IBM PC730 with a
P133, 64MB RAM & 1.2GB HD, minimal graphical system option.

After the filecopy and the first reboot Lilo always said "LIL-"

I booted from a floppy to complete the setup, no change.

I booted from a floppy again and said the setup, it should boot from
harddrive, so i can repair lilo.

The window manager and all other functions work without any problems.

OK, i've run lilo, it said it wrote itself into the MBR and so on. K,
halted and rebooted, nothing changed, lilo sais still "LIL-". The
Handbook says something about wrong HD-geometry and a corrupted
map-file... no idea what to do...

Any suggestions?

Thx a lot

marc
