HP SCSI tape not working on Adaptec 1542B

Post by Uwe Schuerka » Wed, 27 Mar 1996 04:00:00

Dear linux gurus,

I'm trying to get an HP SCSI tape to work on my Adaptec 1542B.
When I try to tar something onto a tape (I've tried both 60 and 90
meters) the following message appears when I call dmesg(1):
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
st0: Error 18000002. extra data not valid Deferred error st0: sns = 71
3
Raw sense data:0x71 0x00 0x03 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x0b 0x00 0x00 0x00
0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00
st0: Error on write filemark.

0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The tape drive gets recognized by the kernel at boot time ok:

I've tried various BIOS adapter settings, like en/disabling SCSI
disconnection, parity, etc., but to no avail. The tape drive
appears to work fine (verified using Quarterback 5.0 on an Amiga
4000T, both reading and writing work great).

Kernel version is 1.2.13, if that matters.

Please reply by e-mail as I cannot read this group on this site. I'll
post a summary if this proves to be of general interest.

Thanks very much in advance for your time,

Uwe.

1. ADAPTEC 1542B DOES NOT RECOGNIZE SCSI TAPE DRIVE AND SCSI TAPE ?

This sounds like an error condition.
No. In all cases the LUN should be "0" since all of the devices that
you have contain imbedded SCSI controllers. The Physical address should be
what each device is strapped as, on the device itself.

You should also run ASPI4DOS and ASPITAPE to get the most out of the
configuration. I have a Wangtek 150 MB tape drive, but I gave up on it - it
is a useless piece of steel and wires. I now use an Archive 2150S.

I hope this helps.
