Linux and Adaptec 1542B SCSI ISA Card

Linux and Adaptec 1542B SCSI ISA Card

Post by creatu » Thu, 03 Sep 1998 04:00:00

hiya all,

I know that the 1542 is listed as supported, but is the 1542B
supported?  Am I just being stupid and these are the same card, or did
Adaptec pull a switch on me?  I'd like to know before I buy the card.

thanks,
jason

I haven't used a 1542B in a Linux box, but use quite a bit of Adaptec
under DOS. AFAIK, the 1542B is at least 10 years old.  I've got one,
and it works fine under DOS using the same drivers as the 1542C's, so
it's got to work about the same.  Differences I've noticed: Setup
absolutely requires documentation because jumpers are used for EVERYTHING
and it SEEMS to be more critical that you observe length restrictions and
termination.

Actually, they're up around 1542D these days.  There are slight hardware
differences (e.g. in the connector), but not in the chipset.  I have yet
to find a 1542 that Linux won't handle.  (There's always a first time,
but I _own_ a 1542B; works fine.)

The 1542B is an older version.  It has jumpers instead of the
software config that the C has.  I works fine with Linux.
www.adapetec.com/support/ has info on configuring it if you
need to find out what jumper does what.

1. Adaptec 1542B SCSI card not working for Slackware 2.3.0

I had Slackware 2.0.0 installed and working fine with my Adaptec 1542B
SCSI card in a 486/33.  I wanted to upgrade to Slackware 2.3.0 but the
boot disk does not seem to recognize the card.  The error I get is:

Unable to determine Adaptec dma priority.  Disabling board.

The source for the driver shows that this is in the inquiry section.  I do
not have enough expertise to carry this source code analysis furthur.

I've tried the boot disks: scsi, sbpcd, and scsinet1.  Once I got the
scsinet1 disk to recognize the card and scsi devices when in non-turbo
mode.  At that time I installed the 'a' series disks but the kernel installed
on the disk has the same problem.

I've looked through the FAQ and HOWTO's but have not found anything.  Someone
else must have run into this already.

How do I get around this?  Would setting the BUSON and BUSOFF values help?
