1662D + New Award BIOS 5.1 = unable to boot lilo

Post by J. Maynard Gelin » Mon, 29 Jun 1998 04:00:00

   Hello,

I have a Tyan 1662D with two PPRO 180's, 128MB RAM, Symbios Logic
NCR 53C825 SCSI controller, S3/968 video, Intel EtherExpress 16
networking, and an IDE cdrom drive.  I'm running RH 5.1 Linux and
booting from a 4GB Seagate ST15230N drive.  Recently I flashed the new
Award 5.1 BIOS available on the Tyan web page for Y2K issues, and also
to support CDRom booting.

Upon flashing I noticed that lilo (the Linux boot loader) refuses
to boot at all, while standard DOS and NT boot loaders work just fine.
This is true not only for my SCSI drive, but also for standard IDE
drives as well.  Take an arbitrary drive which uses lilo and it
refuses to boot outputing after POST "INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ANY
KEY", but in a hard disk with DOS or NT on it and away you go.
Curiously, CDROMs and floppies with lilo boot just fine.

I've attempted to contact Tyan support to no avail.  They never
return calls or email - I'm getting pretty damn frustrated with them.
To resolve this problem I've been forced to fall back to the previous
BIOS (which works just fine).  Has anyone else seen this behavior, and
if so do you have any suggestions?  I tried just about _every_ 5.1
BIOS setting for boot order, floppy seek, BIOS shadowing, etc.  This
BIOS seems like a real dud... am I alone in noticing this?  Hell, Tyan
seems like a real loser company too... I think I'll be try SuperMicro
next time.

I have had plenty of luck with my tyan 1562 dual...
tyan support through email came back 3-7 days later...

are you sure the bios is f*cked? try booting off a lilo boot disk... if
that works than you have to play a little more before blaming the bios...

The 5.01 BIOS is *very* different from the 4.0E bios in the way it supports
multiprocessors. In particular, it no longer enumerates the video board int-
errupt and it lists all the PCI interrupts as ISA interrupts. This is true in
both the MPS1.1 and MPS1.4 modes.

If you have a multiprocessor-aware OS and it expects "sane" MP config data
from the BIOS, it will likely not work under BIOS 5.01 without coding changes.

   Several points:

   a) The Tyan 1662D is not a 1562, they are separate product lines.

   b) I already mentioned that I am able to boot lilo off of floppy and
CDRom drives, but not any sort of hard disk when using the Award
5.1 BIOS.  I have spent weeks twiddling with this BIOS and am
convinced it's a BIOS bug.  Falling back to the previous BIOS
solves the boot problem which suggests this is not a hardware
failure, but is a problem with the new BIOS revision.

   c) The fact that the BIOS will boot DOS and NT while refusing to boot
lilo suggests to me that it's a forced 'virus' check without the
BIOS option to turn it off... but that's only a guess.

   d) Tyan may have provided quality support for you.  If so I'm happy
for you, but that doesn't excuse the fact that they have completely
      ignored me.

However, thanks for responding to my post!  Any other takers?

Hmm, "sane" MP config data.  That might explain problems w/IntranetWare 4.11
in SMP mode.  Novell doc's specify strict adherence to MPS1.4

Well, I've run this past some "bus lawyers" and the general opinion is that
what Tyan is doing is legal per the spec, but bizarre enough that most SMP
OS's that have never seen it before will need modification to understand the
data that's returned.

For what its worth, FreeBSD-current SMP runs just fine with
the 5.01 BIOS, the 4.01 BIOS was even worse, it had wierd
entries in the mp table...

1. LILO with Award BIOS

While doing an install for a client (as remote support) I ran into
the following anomaly:

System info:  PC Clone, 166Mhz Pentium, PCI, two IDE controllers (PCI
on-chip), two IDE disks, Adaptec 2940L, SCSI disk. Only
other cards are a generic VGA and a 3com ethernet. All
disks have more than 1024 cylinders.

        1. Even with LINEAR specified, we couldn't write a good
LILO boot sector to begin with, be it on floppy, IDE disk,
        or SCSI disk.

        2. We tried disabling the IDE drives (on a drive basis, from
the BIOS) and still no go.

        3. We disabled the IDE controllers, and LILO wrote the boot
sector on the SCSI drive MBR, and the system booted normally.

        4. We re-enabled the controllers, and the system still
        boots properly.

It took us a while to figure the connection, as we happened on this
by accident while trying to find a way to boot a Linux kernel from
the SCSI disk.  We re-made the kernel, then could no longer boot
or write a good LILO loader to the SCSI MBR.  When we disabled
the IDE controllers, re-ran LILO, then enabled the controllers,
the system would boot properly.

I believe this must be a LILO bug, as the difference is that
the controllers must be disabled when the LILO is written, not
at other times.  We received the warning about the SCSI disk
not being the first drive *only* when the IDE drives (not controllers)
were enabled in the BIOS.

If anyone can tell me the email address (if any) to report LILO
bugs, or can explain the situation, I would appreciate it.
