28.8 K modem/serial speed ?

Post by **Nick Brow » Fri, 26 Mar 1999 04:00:00

How can I get kppp (for example; or c-kermit, for that matter) to drive
my 28.8 Kbps modem at 28800 ?  The only speed choices I get are 19200,
38400, 57600, plus of course higher and lower numbers.

The speed choices presented by your application are computer-to-modem
speeds.
The rated speed of your modem, 28800, is a modem-to-modem speed.  You should
set
the computer-to-modem speed as high as you can in the application.  Then
you'll get
28800 modem-to-modem, assuming your telephone line quality is good enough.
Some
modems/serial ports can only run at up to 57600: it just depends on the
hardware involved.
That's not a problem for you since you're working with 28800.  Just don't
pick 19200 since
that will effectively limit your throughput to 19200.

Good luck!

Great !  I tried it at 57600.  Now of course KPPP says I'm "connected at
57600" which I'm not (neither my modem nor the ISP's can go faster than
28800 - the ISP does everything faster with ISDN), but it is noticeably
faster, so I presume I'm actually connected at 28800.  Thanks !

Actually, strictly speaking, you probably _are_ connected at 57600, but
not really... <g>

57600 is 28,800 + theoretical 2:1 compression from MNP5, or whatever
compression standard your modem & ISP both support.
BTW, MNP 5 allows for theoretical max. of 115,200, so if Kppp supports
this option, you should use it instead. Every bit of compression helps,
especially at 28.8

You could probably send some init-string to your modem to make it report
the line speed instead of the serial speed.

Sometimes it can be useful with a serial speed of 115200 bps even with a
28800 bps modem. The modem has a built in compression protocol which
when downloading repeating data or simple text can give a higher speed
than 57500 bps.

Hi,

Try to add to the INIT string  S95=44
then after the connection is established the modem would tell you
CARRIER 28800
CONNECT 57600

Or else see http://www.math.sunysb.edu/~comech/tools/CheapBox.html#modem
for the list of vendors who sell V.90 modems for $40-$50 and fly at
CARRIER 48000
CONNECT 115200

Cheese,
Andrew

Thanks... I'm torn between staying with my current ISP (who are a very
professional, Linux-friendly outfit) and upgrading to ISDN, or going to
someone else with V90 and keeping my current regular phone line.

Hi, my 1/2 of a cent:
Actually, the only reason I use a regular modem is because I
have a free dialup to my university.

I figured I _do_ want call waiting, perhaps with caller ID,
or else I will lose all my friends... In a week I will see how it
works (certainly I do not want PPP to die without warning).
Well, call waiting and caller ID is already about $15/month,
and if I'd pay additional money to ISP, then certainly I'd
get a much faster cable modem or something for $25(?)/month.
See how this compares to your situation.

Cheese,
Andrew

1. Problem with 16550A high speed serial port and 28.8 modem

Hi I have a 28.8 modem that I was using a 16450 uart.  Everything worked
fine, but I decided to get a faster serial card with 16550A uarts.

I got everything hooked up ok and I can dial out and connect with ppp
but when I start anything that transfers a lot of data the connection
stops totally untill I hangup and redial.

I used setserial to specify the spd_vhi flag, and it detects the right uart.
What is causing this.  With ftp it will hang within 10 seconds.  Going
back to the old serial port everything is fine again??

I am running kernel version 1.3.45 ppp 2.2.0c

Thanks
Brian

Ps I run the 16540 uarts with the spd_vhi also and it connects at a high
rate with very few errors.
