I have a Compaq 33.6 Modem and am Curious to know if it will work under
Caldera OpenLinux. I know that PnP Modems or WinModem and LINUX are not
Supported but I dont know if this stupid Modem is PnP or not.

It is a WinModem - so it will NOT work under Linux.
Once I have found a message - it was this:
-----------------------------------------begin----------------------------- This is a winmodem! All modems on modern Compaq Presario's are also, Gateway, HP, NEC, and other computer giants do it to. Sorry I ------------------------------------end------------------------------------ -- "Die Dummen sind so sicher und die Gescheiten so voller Zweifel."
winmodems. A winmodem is a ROMless modem that will only work in
Windows 95, because the software written to bring it to life is only
written for that OS. It will NOT work in Linux, OS/2, DOS, Windows NT,
or any other operating system. So, if you want a modem in Linux, buy
a REAL modem, that has a ROM in it. I think Compaq and other
computer vendors putting winmodems in their computers are acting in
a fraudalent way towards their customers. It's not JUST Compaq doing
this,
couldn't help you. Buy a good modem, and trash the winmodem. But, be
ware--on those Presario's, the cheap Compaq modem is in it's own slot,so
taking it out will leave a hole in the back of your computer, that you
can't
do much about. Then after taking it out, run over it with you car, or
send
it
to some relative you don't care about. Have fun....

Hopefully some future kernel will suport winmodems... but, who believes this anyway?? :)

1. Help: Modem doesn't work -- Compaq Presario 336-VSC Modem
I'm using a Compaq Presario 336-VSC Modem which works very well under
Win95. But it seemed that linux can't recognize it at all. When I run
kermit, I got an error message as follows,
C-Kermit> set line /dev/cua1
C-Kermit> /dev/cua1 is not a terminal device
C-Kermit> sorry, can't open connection to /dev/cua1
When I am trying setserial -a /dev/ttyS1, the irq(3) and port(0x02f8)
are ok but uart is UNKNOWN.
It's a fax-modem connected to COM2 and thus the device name should be
/dev/cua1 and /dev/ttyS1.
Could you please give me any idea about what is going wrong? Do I need
a special device driver?
