Trouble with 3rd and 4th IDE drives on Acer PCI motherboard

Post by Alan Bro » Tue, 11 Apr 1995 04:00:00

I'm trying to install 3rd and 4th Maxtor 7420AV IDE drives on my Acer
Altos 700i server.

This machine uses Saturn Rev 4 PCI, and has a CMD 640A (rev 1)
controller on the motherboard, controlling 2 EIDE ports.

The drives work fine if installed as 1&2, and are identical to the
existing drives 1&2.

autoprobing works fine, correctly identifying the drive type,
cyl,hd,sec and that ide1 is on irq 15

If drives 3&4 are plugged in, the boot sequence never completes,
failing with the following messages.

hdc: set_geometry_intr: status=0xd0 { busy }
ide1: do_ide_reset:sucess
hdc: set_geometry_intr: status=0xd0 { busy }
ide1: do_ide_reset:sucess
hdc: set_geometry_intr: status=0xd0 { busy }
end_request: I/O error, dev 1600, sector 0

hdc is major 22, minor 0
hdd is major 22, minor 64

About the only strange thing is that the machine's bios only reports 2
drives. (Acer bios)

If drives 3&4 are not plugged in, ide1 is not detected.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated...

Too bad.  Everyone oughta know by now how buggy the CMD IDE interfaces are.

Quote:>hdc: set_geometry_intr: status=0xd0 { busy }

Something funny with the CMD IDE ports.
Replace them with just about any other brand.

Kinda difficult when the controller is part of the motherboard....

Anyone got any better suggestions?

1. 3rd and 4th IDE drive with Linux

--

I have a Gateway 2000 486 which has two IDE controllers built-in
to the motherboard.  I have hooked up 3 drives to it and it
works well under DOS and OS/2.  But under Linux, I don't know
how to access the thrid drive.  All I see under /dev is
/dev/hda* and /dev/hdb*.  How can I get to /dev/hdc* ?
Can I mknod them?

One other question, is there any way to change the permission on
the dos file partition so that everybody can read and write to them?
I have, for example, /hda3 mounted as /dosc.  I cannot
"chmod 777 /dosc" so that all users can read and write to it.  Any
suggestion?

Thanks for the help.
