HP ScanJet 3c scans very dark

I've been using the hpscanpbm utility with my HP ScanJet 3c scanner and scans
appear much darker than those I get from the TWAIN software on MS Windows.
Perhaps this has something to do with it having 30bit color resolution. My
question is: is there an update for this utility, or more interestingly, where
can I get a programming manual or programming information on the scanner.

I am trying to install an HP ScanJet 3c under Merge 3.2.2t.

Is this possible?  I need advice on using the HP card or the Adaptec
card and instructions on creating a token for merge.
