I have dual boot WIN Me + Mandrake 9.0 on a Compaq Presario PC with
2 harddrives. Since last week I am unable to boot my PC (with "boot
record not found on IDE0" message). I used the MDK 9.0 disk to boot in
rescue mode and I ran dmesg and got the following error repeated many
times. Using the rescue CD, I am unable to mount /dev/hda but I am able
to mount /dev/hdb. fdisk on /dev/hda and /dev/hdb shows the partition
tables are not corrupted.

hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC }

Assuming the problem was the harddrive, I bought a new western
digital HDD and installed it using the new cable with it, and loaded
MDK 9.0 on it and the 3 CD install ran fine with no problems. When I
rebooted with the new HDD and a fresh install if MDK 9.0, I was again
unable to boot. Using MDK CD in rescue mode, I saw the same errors as
ones I got with the old harddrive.

I am quite lost. Any and all pointers is appreciated.

Thanks..

looks like a dma-problem to me:

Peter,

Thanks.. I found the problem. The IDEO controller on the motherboard
went bad and do I connected the Primary Harddrive to IDE1 controller
and it boots and then hangs since it cannot find the root partition on
/dev/hda5... I think I now need to modify lilo to look at /dev/hdc5.

Thanks,
Ramesh

I am afraid that it is a long-shot (bearing in mind the new drive/cable),
but are you sure you don't have any sharp bends or kinks in the cable?  I
have seen those errors caused by that.

Pass the option root=/dev/hdc5 to the kernel on boot.  You can do that right
from your lilo prompt.  Type <your label> root=/dev/hdc5
In case you use a graphical menu, I think you hit tab to get to the prompt.

Hope that helps!

1. hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC )

i am running rh 7.3 on an athlon 950 with 512 ram and
a maxtor 40 gig drive, and i get this error several times
an hour. i also get 'no 80 pin condutor cable' at boot up
if that means anything.

i swapped cables and replaced the drive with an identical
maxtor -- no change.

i google'd this and got nothing that seemed relevant.

is this something i need to worry about? any idea appreciated.

tia.
