hardware raid-1 with iwill kv2000r motherboard

I just now figured out how to get software raid-1 to work.  But I have a
motherboard (iwill kv2000-r) that supports hardware raid.  I would rather
use the hardware raid.  It lets you set it up in the bios with a utility
called HyperDisk.  If I don't have software raid and I physically move the
HDs over to the IDE Raid controller and setup HyperDisk.  Linux will boot
and get to VFS: Panic.  I thought the OS doesn't even have to know about
hardware raid?  Are the devices different on the raid controller.  IE
something other than /dev/hda and /dev/hdb.  Does anyone have any experience
with this Iwill board?  I could use _ANY_ pointers or help that anyone could
spare.

Thank you very much in advance!

hardware raid-1 with iwill kv2000r motherboard

Hey this is JFM (from someone elses computer) so dont email reply

OK I found out that AMI makes my raid controller and called hyperdisk100
(for ata100). AMI.com has an RPM file to patch the 2.2.16-3 kernel for use
with RH6.1.  It does make new /dev/ devices so I dont have do fiddle with
s/w raid, I just use new /dev devices in fstab and the bios does all the
hardware raidstuff for me.  Here is my problem that I need help with: I am
using RH7 with the 2.2.16-22 kernel.  And when I used gnorpm to 'upgrade' it
warned me that some files require the new kernel (16-22).  How should I go
about this?  Anyone have any ideas?

1. fast-wide-SCSI, IWill motherboard, can't format drive

I'm trying to install the Slackware distribution on a machine
with an IWill motherboard.  This motherboard has a built in fas-wide
SCSI connection that uses, I believe, an Adaptec 7850 (judging from
the messages in setup).  When using the aidecd image I am able to see
the drive and, according to fdisk, partition it as I wish, but when
attempting to set up the swap partition or format any other partition
I get errors scrolling by too fast to read.

The drive is a 2 gig Seagate Barracuda.

I have the Infomagic 5 CD set and so could use the Red Hat
distribution if there is an image there that will work.

     Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Patrick May
