DVD burning errors

I've just purchased a Pioneer 8x DVD burner.  Its listed on my system as:
"PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-107D, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive".  I am running Slackware
9.1 with cdrtools-2.00.3-i486-1 and dvd+rw-tools-5.12.4.7.4-i486-1 and
kernel 2.4.26.  I recently burnt a disk but was unable to access the disk
(got an error when I tried to mount it), until I rebooted the computer.  The
command cdrecord --scanbus returned gobbledegook against 0,0,0 after burning
the disk, but returned "0,0,0     0) 'PIONEER ' 'DVD-RW  DVR-107D' '1.10'
Removable CD-ROM" after rebooting.

I rebooted my system, loaded the sg module (I'm not sure if this was loaded
first time!), and burnt another disk.  This time all went OK, but I still
get errors in my syslog thus:

Apr 26 16:38:35 mycomputer kernel: SCSI host 0 abort (pid 85146) timed out -
resetting
Apr 26 16:38:35 mycomputer kernel: SCSI bus is being reset for host 0
channel 0.
Apr 26 16:38:35 mycomputer kernel: SCSI host 0 channel 0 reset (pid 85146)
timed out - trying harder
Apr 26 16:38:35 mycomputer kernel: SCSI bus is being reset for host 0
channel 0.
Apr 26 16:38:35 mycomputer kernel: hdc: ATAPI reset timed-out, status=0x80
Apr 26 16:39:05 mycomputer kernel: ide1: reset timed-out, status=0x80
Apr 26 16:39:05 mycomputer kernel: hdc: status timeout: status=0x80 { Busy }
Apr 26 16:39:05 mycomputer kernel: hdc: drive not ready for command
Apr 26 16:39:26 mycomputer kernel: hdc: ATAPI reset complete

I don't like the look of these errors!  Does anybody know what's going on?

Hint - I used to get these problems on my old CD burner until I started
ejecting it before reading the disk.  I ejected the disk before burning my
DVD this time.
