HDD error during massive access

Post by Axel Prob » Fri, 26 Jan 1996 04:00:00

Hello,

I've got a problem with my second harddisk.
It is the one that carries my /usr-tree.

A week or so ago it started to spin down sometimes during work and then
after some time it made the typical sound like booting when it was
accelerated again.

During this time the whole computer was locked.

This happens especially when there is more than one process accessing
files in the /usr-tree.

The error messages that are logged are of the following type:

... hdb: read_intr: status=0xff { Busy }
... ide0: do_ide_reset: success
... hdb: DRDY error: status=0x00 { }
... last message repeated 3 times
... ide0: do_ide_reset: success

Once the same thing (spinning down) occured but then the computer was
totally locked and I had to hit the reset button.

My question is now:

 Do I have to buy a new harddisk or is it a software problem.
 (What I don't think because it occured not after upgrading the
  kernel or anything like this)

My system is:
  486DX40 VLB
  12MB RAM
  hda: Quantum LPS 540 (yes I know)
  hdb: Quantum LPS 270 (I still know)
  hdc: Mitsumi FX400

I would be very pleased if someone could tell me anything enlighting
in this case. By the way I already backed up the whole /usr-tree on
free partitions on hda.

Thanx in advance
Axel.
