Xircom CEM56? modem error

Xircom CEM56? modem error

Post by Rob Watki » Mon, 05 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I have a Toshiba 2500CDS and a Xircom CreditCard Ethernet 10/100 +
Modem56 pcmcia card (CEM56-100BTX(AU)) which works fine under Windows98
form which I am writing this post :(. Under RH Linux 5.1
fresh/everything installation, the ethernet works but not the modem. I
have tried fiddling around with /etc/pcmcia/serial.opts but I can only
break the eth0 device. This is my first time using Linux on a notebook
and I am desperate to get this modem going over the (Australian) long
weekend.

I have checked HW list:
        Linux PCMCIA Supported Device List
        Last updated: 1998/08/20 23:01:39
and it seems to be supported:
        [xirc2ps_cs driver]
        Xircom CreditCard CEM28, CEM33, CEM56

Any help at all would be appreciated! :)

Xircom CEM56? modem error

Post by Rob W. van Swo » Wed, 07 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Rob,

I have also RH5.1 and a  Xircom Realport (Ethernet and Modem); I had the
same problem but the solution was simple: get the latest version of the
PCMCIA package (i.e. pcmcia-cs-3.0.5.tar.gz) from
ftp://csb.stanford.edu/pub/pcmcia/ ; read the PCMCIA-HOWTO.

I had my first experience with installing linux on a laptop and it was very
easy. Installing the package was for me: put the pcmcia-cs-3.0.5.tar.gz in
/usr/src; unpack and untar; go to the pcmcia directory; do 'make config and
then 'make all' and then 'make install';
After rebooting the system both the modem and the ethernet card functions
are recognized!

Hope this helps!

Regards,
Rob van Swol
