BIG (> 6 Gb) IDE Harddrives on old 486 bios

Post by pet-z.. » Wed, 09 Sep 1998 04:00:00

Hi everyone,

I have an older i486DX33 running as a FTP/HTTP server (Red Hat 5.0),
and I would like to add to it a 6.4 Gb IDE drive.  I know that DOS/Win
requires a special patch on the boot block of large HDs to run with
older BIOSes.  Does Linux require anything special?  I couldn't locate
an appropriate HOWTO...

Thanks,
Paul

As long as you do only run Linux on that drive, you won't need a
workaround. Linux doesn't use the CMOS information; instead, it
searches the attached devices all by itself. Just make sure that
your / partition is beyond cyl. 1024, if you want to use this
drive as boot device.

1. 8MB -> 16MB Big slowdown on 486/50 with AMI bios.

        I have a 486DX2/50 with a November 1992 AMI BIOS running Linux
1.1.45, and I just went from 8 1Meg chips, to 4 4Meg chips and when
I did this, my computer slowed by a factor of 4.  It was really
sad.  But when I went back to MS-DOG, it ran fine.  No slowdowns
under DOG.  Can somebody tell me what might be the problem?
Is there an option in the kernel besides the CONFIG_MAX_16 that might
have an effect?  I set the CONFIG_MAX_16 to n.  Help?

Any and all help is appreciated..

Aaron
