Does a TRIDENT 9680 or a S3 Vision864 video card work?

Post by Bruce Smit » Wed, 02 Oct 1996 04:00:00

I just ordered a new PC that comes with a TRIDENT 9680 2MB video card.
I can't find mention of that card in any of the Linux XFree86 docs.

Can someone tell me if it's supported in the current or beta
release of XFree86?

If not, I have my eye on a:
"64-Bit S3 Vision864 4MB PCI Graphics Accelerator DEC's Model #PCXAG-AL"

I see the 864 chipset is supported.  Can anyone tell me how well
it works?    Thanks in advance,

I have a DEC PCI Card with a S3-864, although I'm not sure of the model.
It came with 2Mb and has sockets for a further 2Mb.

It works very well up to 16bit colour, but there is very pronounced
snowing at 24 bit. It is between 2/3 and 1/3 as fast as a S3-968
card I owned previously (slowest at high colour deoths). It was however
1/4 of the price.

There is some corruption of the screen under certain cirmustances -
for instance, waggling a 16-bit opaque window over a 16-bit background
results in a (small) number of white dots appearing. Refreshing the
display removes the dots.

There are paremters for XConfig that are needed to remove snowing at
16 bit. See the S3.README for details.

1. Trident 9680 Video Card vs. Cirrus Login 5430 Video Card

Greetings!

I'm in a situation here...  Got my choice of a Trident 9680 or a Cirrus
5430 video card.  Both are PCI, both have 2 megs.

They're both supported under Win/NT 4.0..  Here's the rub - Which is the
better card under X-free86?  Are there problems with either of them?  I'd be
after 800x600x256, will these cards handle this mode under X?

    Thanks!
