Please help. Problems with Booting From Abit Hotrod.

I have been at this to days now, someone must be able to put me out of my
misery ...please ??!?

Firstly I am on day four of Linux installation/use.  I look good and I
really what to learn as much about it as possible........but,

My distribution of Redhat 6.0 arrived the day after my shiney new Fujitsu
17gb HD and Abit Hotrod 66 controller.

After the initial problems of the install program not being able to see and
HD's,  I found a document via one of these NG's that instructed me to tell
the kernel where the ide channels where located
    'ide2=0x????,?????? ide3=??????,?????'
Also on this page was mentioned a patch for kernel 2.2.12 which I also
downloaded.  After I got installed I found some programs wouldn't write to
the HD (linixconf for one) so I put this down to forcing the HD channels at
boot.

So I tried the patch 'ide2.2.12.19991014.patch' but when patching I get a
few error chunks mixed in the the successfully patch messages.

This then seems to cause problems with missing files when trying to
recompile the kernel.  using make config, dep, modules, modules_install,
bzImage <- at which point it crashes.

So I downloaded kernel 2.3.23, which compiled and even booted.  Only while
it boots I get the message '/boot/System.map incorrect kernel'.   This
causes various things not to work, like ppp etc.

Any help only any point would be greatly received, and you will become my
new hero.

Also I am sorry for rambling but I've been at work for 12hours then sat
infront of this damn PC for 6.5............................

Regards.

Jon.

You should find a System.map file in the source tree of your new
kernel. Copy it to the /boot directory (suitable renamed) and then
change the Sytem.map link in /boot to point to this new map. This
requirement is often missed in Howto's on kernel updates (being redhat
specific ... I think). Another option is to just trash the System.map
link in /boot and it should use the System.map file in your new source
tree.
