NEC CD-ROM Reader Model#CDR-37 parallel-SCSI

Does anyone know how I would installed Linux with the above CD-ROM?

1. CD-ROM: NEC CDR-37 parity error

I have a FD TMC850 SCSI controller with an NEC "Intersect" CDR-37 CD-ROM.
They work great in DOS, but I get a parity error on the CD-ROM under Linux.
(Autoprobe failed to find the FD card, so I use append="tmc8xx=0xca000,5".)
I've tried different IDs (0,1,2), with and without termination.  Same error.

The HARDWARE HOW-TO states under "14.3. Notes":
"Early (single speed) NEC CD-ROM drives may have trouble with currently
   available SCSI controllers."
Is the CDR-37 such an "early drive"?  If so, any solutions/fixes?

Any ideas?

I recompiled the kernel with -DDEBUG=0x1FF for drivers/scsi/seagate.c
and this is what the boot diagnostics show:
