with certain internal modems, you may have to go some hoops for get them
properly recognized (pnp modems in particular)  Once they're recognized as
valid serial devices, however, the setup is identical.

When setting up linux for a modem, does it make a difference between
internal and external, or are they pretty much treated the same way?

Nope. A modem is a modem is a modem. However, if you get a Plug and Pray
internal modem, you'll need to download isapnptools from
http://www.roestock.demon.co.uk/isapnptools/ to deal with how PnP
handles IRQ assignments.

And whatever you do, don't get a so-called "Win-modem"! Those require
software to work that only runs on Lose95.

1. Internal vs. External modems

I notice a lot of requests for modems for Linux but, none so far has
specify if the recommendations (boca multi port, digicom) ware for
external or internal.
I have a few internal modems I would like to use and from what I have
read beyond 4 system performance begins to suffer. What I would like
to know is if these recomendations are for boxes with dedicated
processors that extend the amount of slots in your pc by way of some
kinda of external expansion box.  I heard about such a thing about 4
or 5 years back so supposedly it does/did exist at one point.
