I use Promise ATA100 and it works well. I have two computers with ABIT KT7-RAID motherboard and it works well too (except that I can not use RAID chip as it cheap and support RAID only in software
driver - linux has own RAID driver which works well without this IC. There is another issue - I can boot boot from that disks - some limitations of LILO -- have to use boot floppy). If you looking
solution for workstation you can use any mentioned. If you are looking for production server go with SCSI card and SCSI disks.
