Does anyone have the mode lines for an S3 864 video card chip set for 16 bit
color depth. I can get the card to work great in 8bpp but the 16 bpp is getting
to be a pain.

I was told that Dell ships #9 771 cards, which are not supported,
because of the RAMDAC.  When did you buy your machine?  Which card is
it?

1. Only one visual in 16 bpp S3 server mode?

I've just upgared to XFree86 3.1.1 (from 2.1) to get the possibility
of using my S3 805 card 64k color modes. I was able to configure
the server to run inboth 8 and 16 bpp modes, but, to my surprise,
in 16 bpp mode the only available visual is TrueColor which makes
some programs (e.g. using libsx library) fail. What is interesting,
the 8 bpp mode provides a variety of visual types, including
(though not very useful) even 8-bit TrueColor.

I have got similar problems on Sun after upgrading to TrueColor video card
but here the solution was to run X server with default visual set to
PseudoColor -- allowing all programs that dislike TrueColor to run fine,
still having the TrueColor visual available for the applications that can
use it.

Is this problem solve-able in XFree86? Of course, I can start X in 8 bpp
mode if I need to run these apps, but this is not the solution I'd prefer.

best regards,

Michal.
