Ontrack Disk Manager support?

Post by Paul Engli » Fri, 12 Jul 1996 04:00:00

Ack! I've managed to set up DOS wonderfully on a laptop, networking and all
after a lot of work, and now am ready to install linux. I boot into linux
and it appears that in spite of the fact that I only gave DOS 200M of a 1.3
gig drive, that all of the drive is taken up with a partition of type "Unknown"
BLAH!. I assume this is the Ontrack Disk Manager.. what can I do about this?
I got the hard drive preformatted, etc, but there's no documentation for the
Disk Manager, so I can't uninstall it (if that's even possible), and I don't
dare use Linux to modify my partition, as it will probably blow up in my face.
I want to install Slackware, so what do I do? I'm fairly certain I saw
"support for Ontrack Disk Manager" in the 2.0 documentation, but I have to
have a system first, before I can upgrade to 2.0! Do I have to wait for
Slackware 3.1 (or whatever is next), to come out? Am I being ignorant and
not RTFMing? (I tried to find a FAQ, or HOWTO, but no luck.. it appears there
is a Large-IDE mini HOWTO in the works? Any pointers appreciated)
        Thanks,
                Paul

Support for OnTrack Disk Manager was introduced around kernel 1.3.15.  Check your Slackware
distribution to see if there are any pre-compiled kernels newer than that which you can use.

If so, that should get you going enough to be able to compile and install 2.0.x.

Thanks Bob, and all who respondes, this works perfectly. I wasn't aware of
which point in the development kernels, support for the Disk Manager was added,
but it appears that the Slackware 3.0 1.3.? development kernel install has
full support. Thanks again,

You must migrate your hard drive to bios standard format before Linux can
read your dos partitions properly.  That is what I have been told, and it
has worked for me.  I had to migrate the disk to bios standard, then
shrink the dos partition to the size I wanted, make new partitions for
linux using linux fdisk, then install LILO on the supersector(?) of my
first linux partition because ONTRACK uses the MBR of your drive.

1. Large Hard Disk With Ontrack Disk Manager

Maybe someone can help me with this.  I know that this is probably a
common question but does anyone know how to set up windows 95 and
linux on a 1.2 gig hard disk that is using ontrack disk manager.  I
would like for the windows 95 partition to be about 800 meg and the
linux partiton to be about 400 meg.  My computer requires that I use
the disk manager because I have an older bios.  I have been told that
I need Linux kernel version 1.3.30 or above.  Is this correct and if
so where can I get it.
