EZ Bios Problem- Can't install

Post by mac » Sun, 14 Apr 2002 08:51:39

My system has an "EZ-Bios" in the PC Bios and it won't let me install
Mandrake 8.2.    I created  a Linux Install disk.     When I boot with
the floppy I get:

"SysLynix 1.67 Mandrake Linux Copyright....."
Boot failed, please change disk.

How do I get around this?

Thanks,
mac

EZ-BIOS was made for windows computers and doesn't work with linux in its
natural form.  I am sure ther is a hack to get around this.  Did you go
googling yet?

This is the first thread I found of a reported 1220.

Why do I need EZ-Bios?  How can I get rid off it?

I have an M810LR Mobo with a 20 gig HD, 1 Gighz Duron.

Thanks

You can flush you BIOS, of course, which is dangerous, BTW... I would
disagree that EZ-BIOS is Windows only, 'cause I apparently had it on one of
my computers and Linux installed on it.

Why don't you wanna boot from CD? What is the boot sequence in your BIOS?
Have you disabled PnP?

Good Luck,
UT

EZ-Bios is an software overlay program for pc motherboards that do not support large hard
drives. It tricks your bios into thinking that your HD is only a mere 8
gigs IIRC instead of the actual size, ie: 40GB

This particular program is made by Maxtor, you can go their website and
download an executable (DOS based) that will create a boot floppy.

This will allow you to remove EZ_Bios from your hard drive.
Be careful, this program can be very unforgiving....I speak from previous
bitter experience.

Mark

Thank you all,

I removed  EZ-Bios with software from Maxtor.

Bit late on this as I see you got rid of it.

I use EZbios & have no trouble, but if you want to boot from floppy you
have to let ez boot from hd then take the option it gives to boot from
floppy.

Even thats not strictly true as if you make a grub 0.9 boot disk it can
handle it, as can linux. I guess it could be tricky though just installing
fron cd etc. which I haven't done.

I agree with others there is scope for trouble, but at least EZ only remaps
the first partition, the IBM one does the whole disk I think.

1. Patritioning WD 8.4 GB drive and Linux and EZ-Drive/EZ-Bios

Hi

I just installed a Western Digital 8.4 GB drive on my Micron machine
with a Micronics M54Hi motherboard as the second drive.  This has the
PhoenixBIOS 4.04 which cannot support disks larger than 7.8 GB.  There
is a BIOS (v5.05) upgrade available from Micro Firmware but for $79!  I
installed the WD EZ-Drive software and it partitioned the drive in 4
with about 2.1 GB per partition.  I can see these partitions OK in Win95
(though I do have a spurious E: drive that cannot be accessed).

In Linux (RedHat 4.1 - yes, part of the reason of getting the new drive
was to upgrade to RH5.2), fdisk sees only the first partition of the hard
drive (as /dev/hdb1 with about 2.1GB) with the rest of the drive seen as one
partition with unknown type.  If I use linux fdisk to partition the disk
in what I _think_ is the same partitions as EZ-Drive used then Win95 sees
the first partition but cannot read the other three.  Repartitioning the
drive with EZ-Drive causes the original problem (i.e. can only see the two
partitions in Linux).

I know Western Digital claims that EZ-Drive does not support Unix but
the Large Disk mini-HOWTO claims that Linux will work with EZ-Drive.  I
seem to be almost there.  Has anyone got this working or have any
suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
