Any one use NEC SuperScript 660 or 860 printer with Linux??

Post by Linh C. Nguye » Fri, 06 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Anyone has experience with the NEC SuperScript 660 or 860 printer??

The 660 mode is 6 ppm model and support PCL5 & Postscript 2 language,
but I was told that, it must be run  under Windows 95 only to work with
PS2 language.. I need to verify on this..

The 860 model is a faster one (8 ppm) and supports PCL4 only, it doesn't
support PS2 language.  I want to find out if this model run under
Linux..

Thanks,

Linh C. Nguyen

I have an NEC 860 and output to it using Ghostscript when running
Linux setting the Ghostscript device to "ljet2p".  It works fine.

Note that "ljet2p" will get you only 300 dpi, but these printers are
physically capable of handling 600 dpi.  In other words, they'll work
under Linux, but think of them strictly as 300 dpi models for Linux
work.  In that light, they aren't very appealing, IMHO.

I think HP, Xerox and/or Lexmark have 6 and 8 ppm PCL 5e models that
at least SHOULD work with Ghostscript's LaserJet 4 (600 dpi) driver.

1. NEC SuperScript 860 Printer on Linux...

Hi, y'all---

Has anybody had any experience with one of these on Linux??
It's gotten great reviews on Doze, but I don't know how
it would play on Linux, or if it needs a driver, etc.

Bazically, I just need a reasonably good ps printer, for doing
Web stuff.

thanks for any help in advance,
