HELP!! I am getting crazy!

Post by Ugo Dal La » Sun, 06 Oct 2002 21:56:31

Hi.

From one year, I have been trying to install some Linux (and even
Windows) distributions on my system, but either:
- The installation is not possible, due to problems occurring during
the
copy or installation of packages.
- The installation seems to work right, but infact goes wrong after
rebooting.
Last example is Debian Woody: everything went OK until the base system
installation, when a "failure trying to run: chroot..." appears (the
same
message appeared on every subsequent installation). Even Windows 2K
gets stuck during installation with a blue screen and a "REGISTRY
ERROR". Different
problems nondeterministically appeared on the same hardware
configuration
with the same operating system...

My system is:
Motherboard: ASUS P3V133
RAM: 128 MB
Hard Disk: IBM DJNA 13GB
Video Card: ATI XPERT 98
I tried to change the video card and the hard disk, but the problems
remains the same.

My question is: what is the REASON for all these problems? What should
I do
to understand the problems ?

Thanks.
Ugo

There really only is two more things which could be faulty, one mobo and
the memory, i would try changing the memory first.
Or get the memtest program which runs off a floppy (i could be wrong
there as its been ages since i used it) and will test your memory.
http://www.memtest86.com

The other problem the mobo is a different thing, checkout asus's web site
for possable known glitches and bios updates.

I would install as small slackware set on such a problem machine as
slackware is well known for its tollarance with many different types of
hardware during the install process.
But that is what i would do, others possably will tell you diffently i expect.

I think you need to understand that even if windows is dying with its
famous blue screen then there must be a hardware problem.
No OS in the world can run properly on flacky hardware, that i think
everyone will agree on.

1. Help! I am going crazy with installation.

What is the reason that the Red Hat install process returns an error
during swap partition setup?  It says that the mkswap process exited
with a code 1.  What would that be?  Is my hard disk damaged?  I've
already re-partitioned my HDD (Seagate 2GB, Aha2940 driver) twice and
Slackware seems to install okay but will not boot, while Red Hat just
refuses install (or so it seems) ...
