HP 8100i Install

Post by Dave. D » Tue, 08 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I'm currently running  Red Hat 5.1 on a 486  80 MHz, and am looking to
buy a whole new
system.  I installed  RedHat 5.1  with no  problems at all  using a
Toshiba 32x  IDE  CDROM.
I'm  wondering if anyone out there has installed  Red Hat 5.2  using an
HP 8100i  without having
install  a driver for it first.    I know  5.1 installed very easily
without anything like this.
Any advice doing an installation using  an 8100i  would be
appreciated...

The HP8100 should be an ATAPI compatable drive so you shouldn't
need any kind of special driver when reading.  I'm not sure exactly
what the read speed is on that drive, but I don't think its terribly fast
(something like 6x).  If you happen to have another one available,
it might be worth the time to put another cd drive on the
machine just for the install.  You should be able to use that drive
with no problems.  It just might take a little longer.

I know the drive is an  ATAPI device,  I've just never  heard from anyone
who hastried to do an istall with it.   Its not  really that slow.   It does
24x/4x/2x.  The other  CDROM
I have is a 36x.   Friday's paday....  I'll know on Saturday for sure...

I can confirm that this works.  I installed 5.1 with such a setup.  I
believe the drive gets about 8-12x.  The sales specs are pretty bogus,
like many drives ("up to 24x.")

1. HP 8100i CDRW not working....

Hi:

I have tried kernel reconfig, conf.modules,
updating packages etc, but cannot get
my HP 8100 CDRW to be recognized. I can
play music off of it, I can mount filesytems
off of it, but I can't use it to burn CD's.

Below is some information that might help you
help me.

TIA,
NYCeyes
