The memory problems only seem to appear when I turn the external
cache on (it's 256K). They seem more frequent when running X
(I have an S3 Trio32 chip on the motherboard).

Has anyone had success/failure with these machines, or have any
ideas?

I'm running a 1.2.11 kernel, if that makes any difference.

Try to add wait states..
