Solved. It is necessary to enable the (deprecated) Video for Linux 1
interface in the kernel configuration, then you can select the PCI
cards.

Fedora 5 issue with dhcp not getting its IP from ISP via cablemodem
after I upgraded kernel 2.6.17 from 2.6.16.
If booting, via GRUB, kernel-2.6.16-1.2133_FC5 everything works fine.
Ethernet pci sis900 nic eth0.
Ipv4.
Kernels:
2.6.17-1.2139_FC5
2.6.17-1.2145_FC5
From /var/log/messages:
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 8
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 14
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 15
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 16
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 8
This is a box with two pci nics:
In /var/log/messages I find out that when I boot either kernel
2.6.17, it wants nic sis900 as eth1 and nic rtl8139 as eth0, when I
actually configured it the other way round.
However kernel 2.6.16 has:
sis900 as eth0
rtl8139 as eth1, just the way I configured it.
Googled it, found no meaningful tips.
